Beyond|In Western New York 2010: ALTERNATING CURRENTS — Venues and artists announced
This biennial, multi-venue exhibition will present the work of outstanding artists from Western New York and Southern Ontario, responding to the regionally relevant theme Alternating Currents and its undercurrent of utopian power, both literal and metaphorical; reclamation or use of natural assets; visions of the future and the past; technological progress or intrusion; and the diverse demographic and social constructs of this region.

Character Descriptions
A new project by a San Francisco-based artist who, over the last several years, has realized his work in many distinct iterations. Recent projects include Service-Works: a small foundation he created that awards grants—based upon his income as a waiter in fine-dining restaurant—to other artists, starting an unlicensed therapy practice, attempting to sell a museum curator and his museum office, a collaboration with his wife which involved hiring Danish actors to play the two of them in a video, and creating a small book based on his family members writing about their least favorite projects he has done.

Preparing To Lose
In a culture addicted to win/win, "we're No. 1" scenarios, Heather Layton's Preparing To Lose drawings are imagined as counter-narratives to the cultural norm. Her ambiguous and unidentified characters are fragile, but not fear-ridden. They are part of a team that is not going to win, but persist in trying.

Hallwalls is currently accepting proposals from visual artists for temporary, one-night installations to be a featured element of Stimulus. Only a limited number of installations will be included so preference will be given to the dynamic, the compelling, the arresting, the creatively deranged, and the thematically apt.

In the past 21 incarnations of Hallwalls' Artists & Models Affair, a multitude of Buffalo sites have served as the locus for temporary artistic expressions and controlled insanity: the Broadway Market, abandoned factories, warehouses, auto showrooms, roller rinks, deserted downtown malls and department stores, the Tri-Main Center, and the Buffalo Convention Center. This year's event—officially, the 22nd version of A&M—will take place at Rock Harbor Yard, conveniently located a few minutes from Buffalo State College and Elmwood Village. As always, our site for A&M represents a location, a state of being, a condition, an apparition, a temporary psychosis, an inevitably, a breeding ground for frivolity.

SUBMISSION TIPS
  • LARGE-SCALE is good
  • PERFORMANCE is good
  • VIDEO PROJECTION is good
  • ROAMING performance is good
  • AUDIENCE-PARTICIPATORY works are good
  • FULL NUDITY is NOT good

Participating artists will have approximately 4 days of installation time.
Your Stimulus Proposal should include:
  1. your name, address, phone, email
  2. a detailed description of your proposal (250 words), with images/ sketches, if possible
  3. an indication of your minimum space requirments
  4. a list of your technical/equipment needs (if any—self-sufficiency is always a plus)
