The Historic Colored Musicians Club’s CMC JazzFest 2019, Burchfield Penney Art Center, & Hallwalls present

CMC Tribute Series - ReyVolation: An Homage to Rey Scott

Burchfield Penney Art Center, 1300 Elmwood Ave. Buffalo, N.Y.

A gathering of ten musical souls, paying homage to the ancestral sounds of the great Rey Scott (March 22, 1944-June 23, 2018)—composer, musical innovator, master of free jazz, Sun-Ra Arkestra member, professor of African American musics—will reimagine Scott's sound explorations over the course of his career. The ensemble will revisit Scott's ever-evolving style, delving deep within themselves to seamlessly reconnect jazz to its roots, while consciously and simultaneously working to uproot it. This adventurous collaboration with the Burchfield Penney Art Center and Hallwalls will incorporate small group, full ensemble, and "call and response" formats, in the spirit of the famed musician, master teacher, and historian.

The ReyVolation Ensemble:

Sabu Adeyola (double bass)
Steve Baczkowski (baritone saxophone & other assorted instruments)
Brent Birckhead (saxophones & woodwinds)
Walter Kemp 3 (piano, melodica, & keys)
Curtis Lovell (vocals)
Greg Millar (electric guitar)
RiShon Odel (bass, electric bass, loops)
Ravi Padmanabha (tabla & percussion)
Abdul Rahman Qadir (drums)
Scott Tixier (violin)

Rey Scott at Hallwalls: Rey Scott (1944-2018) played at Hallwalls in the New Jazz Orchestra of Buffalo, the New Jazz Symphonia, and the Composers Alliance of Buffalo, all Hallwalls resident ensembles put together in the early to mid 1990s by Don Metz (now of the Burchfield Penney Art Center), John Bacon, and Rey himself. Rey also played in the Buffalo Improvisers Orchestra put together by Steve Baczkowski in 2010-2015, and in most ensembles of local musicians Hallwalls has put together to work with such HARP visiting artists-in-residence as William Parker (2006), Butch Morris (2008), Douglas R. Ewart (2008), & Roscoe Mitchell (2010), the last of which took place at the BPAC. In the ReyVolation Ensemble, Steve Baczkowski will be playing the baritone sax, Rey's primary instrument, although both are known as multi-instrumentalists.
