Begun in February 2012, Hallwalls' unique and award-winning event features 36 local and regional artists, invited to draw live in two 45 minute sessions. At the conclusion of each drawing session, a half hour of silent bidding begins, with opening bids for all drawings beginning at $39. Artists are invited to participate and are welcome to draw whatever they choose—no theme—in any drawing media with the exception of oil. By the end of the evening, Hallwalls would like winning bidders to walk out with a dry, complete drawing under their arms.

The drawing rally is an opportunity not only for local collectors and enthusiasts to purchase art affordably, it is an event that aspires to bring more artists to the public's attention. Each drawing rally has included repeat artists, however each one has also typically introduced 1/3 new artists to the ever-expanding drawing rally roster. Not all artists in a town know each other, so the event has also enabled artists from different approaches, styles, and generations to become introduced to each other.

Ashley Smith
Three Fold Form

Inspired by Jungian psychology and mythology, Ashley Smith's process is an alchemical cauldron where personal narratives about womanhood, motherhood, research about art, stories, and myths of the wild woman archetype who represents the instinctive nature of woman are boiled together and transmuted to create abstract sculptural forms and installations that sprout from the wall and grow from the ground.

Stephanie Rohlfs
Put One Over

Rohlfs' work springboards from a clean surface appearance and concise formal gestures into a hybridized set of works that make the artist seem part minimalist, part colorist, part humorist. Rohlfs' sculptural gestures are so adroitly specific and contained that each element—a field of color, a drooping form, a slab of shelving—takes on more imminent and emphatic articulation ...
