Following a formula devised in 2015, curators John Massier and Kyle Butler embark on a rapid-fire series of studio visits to see who is making what and what do they have NOW. The intention of Amid/In is to survey the current state of artistic production in the region and highlight artists within the scenario of a group exhibition but in a manner more fulsome than a one-work-per-artist strategy.
The studio visit segment of the project draws from the curators' mutual awareness of regional artists—which could be as direct as having seen a single work that provokes us to want to see more—and explores the present situation of an artist's practice. What are they making now? What is available to show now? What surprises await us in their studios?
It is an exhibition project with minor calculation and maximum exploration. We are provoked by our curiosity in response to....something the artist has done or made us wonder about.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a full color catalogue with an essay by the curators.
