Exhibition continues through February 27

For the 13th time since 2015, Hallwalls presents its regional survey exhibition Amid/In WNY, curated by Kyle Butler and John Massier. Amid/In is envisioned as a regional snapshot, bringing together the most current works by various artists from across the region. the exhibition is centered around no theme but for the regional presence of the artists included.

Following a formula devised in 2015, curators John Massier and Kyle Butler embark on a rapid-fire series of studio visits — close to 300 since 2015 — to determine who is making what and what do they have NOW. The intention of Amid/In is to survey the current state of artistic production in the region and highlight artists within the scenario of a group exhibition but in a manner more fulsome than a one-work-per-artist strategy.

The studio visit segment of the project draws from the curators' mutual awareness of regional artists — which could be as direct as having seen a single work that provokes us to want to see more — and explores the present situation of an artist\'s practice. What are they making now? What is available to show now? What surprises await us in their studios?

Included in the 2026 edition are large-scale paintings, documentary photographs, abstract sculptures, wry drawings, expansive portrait paintings, abstracted architectural paintings, video-based sculpture, modular cutouts, and discreet landscapes by Quaid Baker, Emma Brittain, Robert Finn, Christy Francis, Sussan Giallombardo, Polly Little, Thomas Matyas, Silas Rubeck, Kathleen Shandraw, Mark Taylor, and Rebecca Wing.

It is an exhibition project with minor calculation and maximum exploration. We are provoked by our curiosity in response to...something the artist has done or made us wonder about.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full color catalogue with an essay by the curators.
